2018 RAM 3500: Torque to Spare

There’s more to new RAM trucks than just the popular RAM 1500 at Shaver Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM & FIAT. If you’re finding a need for power, there are heavier-duty RAM trucks that increase your versatility. One in particular — the 2018 RAM 3500 — does a better job of that than most.

The big news for this year is torque. The RAM 3500 used to lag behind some of its competitors, but those days are now decisively gone. We’d like to call attention to one particular powertrain: the Cummins® inline-six turbo-diesel engine, and it pairs to an Aisin six-speed transmission. We’ve seen Cummins® diesels in RAM trucks before, but what makes this one special is its monstrous 930 lb-ft of torque.

What does that mean in everyday use? With a fifth-wheel hitch, it can tow 30,000 pounds. That’s 7,000 pounds more than its nearest competitor. The RAM 3500 can even handle 31,210 pounds when outfitted for a gooseneck trailer… pretty impressive for a truck that’s not a Class 4 or Class 5.

The Uconnect® 8.4 infotainment system also deserves special attention. Even though we love the app support and the ability to play your favorite tunes on long drives, it’s for a lot more than goofing off. With navigation features and the ability to use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot, it’s also a productivity tool. It proves its worth if you’re a contractor or part of a field service fleet.

The RAM 1500 gets plenty of attention, and for good reason. It’s a great truck, and highly capable. However, there are times when the RAM 1500 and even the heavier-duty RAM 2500 need to make way for something bigger and more powerful. When you’ve got a job that calls for the right mix of brains and brawn, you call on the RAM 3500.
